AMERICAN RED WINES

Today's best American Pinots, which come from California and Oregon, approach that Burgundian ideal with some consistency. But it took awhile to get there.

Long after California vintners proved they could make top Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, they still struggled to get the flavors and textures right with Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noirs are shimmering, supple red wines that bear little resemblance to their hearty, tannic brethren.

Made from Burgundy's noble red grape and now crafted with aplomb in the United States, these wines are supreme examples of the influence of soil and climate and the artistry of the winemaker. They are seductive, exotic, and sexy.

AMERICAN WINES

Visitors to the Bay Area are bound to be aware of the wine country to the north, but most are surprised to find another flourishing expanse of vineyards and wineries less than an hour to the east: The Livermore Valley.

Livermore Valley wineries were the first to bottle varietally labeled Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petite Sirah.

Monterey is renowned for its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but also produces excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and more.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are grown in the Santa Maria Valley in a vineyard close to the ocean, allowing gentle breezes and moderate nights to produce a long, gentle growing season.

AMERICAN WHITE WINES

Napa (American White)

The most well-known wine producing region in California is the Napa Valley region. Located slightly inland from the cold Pacific Ocean, grapes are exposed to both sunny days and cool evening climates.

Full-bodied and riper tasting wines are characteristic of Napa Valley Chardonnays. A gentle fermentation is followed by many months of aging in small French and American oak barrels.

Napa Valley Chardonnays accompany a variety of dishes, from simply prepared seafood to lighter red meats.
